Summer Family Fun Day #1: Penn Museum

With school officially out for everyone now (it seemed like forever), I told my son that we would try to do something interesting on my days off. Our first stop was the Penn Museum. It’s been a while since the last time I visited this spot, but I did remember the amazing collection of mummies and Egyptian artifacts. Last Friday, the admission was free in part of the Wawa Welcome America Festival. (A major plus.) Also it’s always great when you can squeeze in a bit of education during summer vaca.

My son really enjoyed his time at the museum. If you have children in your party, be sure to stop by the front desk for a children’s guide to the museum including where to find unique discoveries. Darius was excited to see a coin with his name on it from Persian King Darius II. He also found his name on one of the trucks used for exhibitions by the University.

If you plan on visiting the Penn Museum, here are some this to keep in mind. Parking is very limited. At the time of our visit there was a lot of construction going on around the area and in the parking garage, so keep that in mind. Parking was $22 even though it was supposed to be cheaper (about $12) on the Monday to Friday. There is a cafeteria on site, but we ate ahead of time and saved our money. There is also a gift shop if your looking for a cool souvenir. Also on July 8Penn Museum will be taking away the spinx for renovations. The site currently doesn’t have a date on when to expect its reappearance, but I’m sure you can sign up for updates on the website. Even though our visit that day was free, the Penn Museum is running a special during the month of July and August with $10 admission (usually $15). The museum is closed on Mondays so plan ahead, take advantage of the discounted pricing and get ready to explore this summer! Stay tuned for another Summer Family Fun Day with more fun, free (or inexpensive), and educational ideas.
